Welcoming Our Newest Student
January brought a wonderful milestone as we welcomed a new student to STRIVE U for a mid-year start. We’re thrilled to have her join our community and begin her journey with us!

January 30th marked the deadline for STRIVE U applications, and we’re grateful to everyone who applied. Our team is now gearing up for an exciting February as we meet and interview candidates for the Class of 2028. We can’t wait to get to know this impressive group of applicants!
Thinking About Applying Next Year? It’s Not Too Early!

The new year at TOPS has brought new opportunities and exciting new experiences to students. We continue to volunteer at sites like the Ronald McDonald Charity House. At our volunteer sites, students are working on their job skills, how to use a checklist, where to find cleaning supplies, as well as how to use cleaning equipment.
Students continue to participate in scavenger hunts, learning how to locate items, how to read and interpret the prices of those items, and how to ask staff for assistance when needed. This month we went to a local store called Guitar Center, which has been an interest among students. At Guitar Center, a student requested that a staff play an electric guitar so that we could hear what it sounds like. Students were very excited to hear this and enjoyed dancing to the music. We also purchased some fun musical instruments while there so that we could participate in our new music classes at TOPS. Additionally, Maine Academy of Modern Music (MAMM) visited TOPS to teach us about music. Since then, we created some more music classes for TOPS students, an interest that they have identified in their weekly Padlet reflections.
Students also enjoyed another excellent opportunity—learning how to use a chomp saw (a jig saw with no sharp edges) that to cut cardboard! This Makers Session Workshop provided students with opportunities for creative problem-solving, fine motor skill development, and a space to learn and collaborate in an environment that allows students to feel safe to make mistakes while making art.
TOPS students continue learning about cooking and following recipes. This month students made brown rice and black bean burritos with cheese and salsa. These cooking sessions are wonderful opportunities for students to learn how to follow a recipe, how to work together as a team, and how to clean up after themselves. Beyond that, this provides students with more opportunities to try new, healthy foods that they might not try on their own.
Lastly, students are learning how to sew at TOPS! Students have started with hand stitching and will soon have opportunities to learn how to embroider, mend clothes, and sew patches on their clothing.
Every week we ask students what new activities or new concepts they would like to learn about at TOPS, and we try to design our classes around these topics, as well as teaching other classes that are pertinent to their development as independent adults.

January has been an exciting month filled with learning, teamwork, and new accomplishments! Our participants have taken on several hands-on life skills projects, and we’re so proud of their enthusiasm and progress.
🏠 Mastering Home Cleaning and Winter Safety
Participants have been working hard on keeping a tidy home by using personalized cleaning charts designed to help remember those easy-to-miss tasks. With Maine’s snowy weather, they’ve also stepped up to help keep walkways clear—taking turns shoveling and spreading sand. It’s teamwork, responsibility, and winter preparedness all rolled into one!
🚦 Safety Signs Scavenger Hunt
Learning safety signs turned into a fun and friendly competition this month! From railroad crossings to exit signs at Hannaford’s, participants explored the community to spot as many safety signs as possible. They’re gaining confidence in knowing the difference between safety signs and informational signs—an important life skill!
💵 Budgeting and Ben’s Deli Menu Math
Money management skills were front and center as participants practiced budgeting using a mock menu from Ben’s Deli. They worked through addition, subtraction, and multiplication to build meals within a set budget. These math skills also helped them plan their lunch menus for the week—practical, empowering, and delicious!
We’re thrilled with the progress everyone has made this month and can’t wait for all the learning, laughter, and growth February will bring 💙

Happy New Year! As winter settles in, ACTIVE has been finding meaningful ways to stay connected with our community while keeping cozy. We kicked off the season with a visit to the Southworth Planetarium, where we enjoyed Seasons of Light, a captivating show exploring the astronomy and history behind the holiday season. Our volunteers have also been busy giving back at the Ronald McDonald House Charities, lending a hand in many ways—including baking sweet treats for the families staying there. As we look ahead, we’re excited and inspired by all that 2026 has in store!
WAVES
WAVES is excited to welcome the new year! This January, we’ve been staying warm and engaged with visits to the library, the South Portland Community Center, STRIVE Studios, and other favorite community spots. Our volunteers have also been hard at work at Ruth’s Reusable Recyclables, helping organize and prepare their supplies for continued use. With so much positive momentum, 2026 is already off to a great start!

It may only be January, but STRIVE Studios is already buzzing with creativity! From ceramic seals to a larger-than-life papier-mâché burger, artists have been diving into a wide range of exciting projects. We also had the opportunity to collaborate with Tara from the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, where we explored patterns and color and brought those ideas to life in our own work. Our Mixed Media class in the Tuesday Studio Series has also been hard at work creating collages, assemblages, and sculptures. We can’t wait to carry this creative momentum throughout the year!
